Gene Anderson started Armstrong Warehouse and Transfer in Lubbock, Texas in 1947. A family-owned company that offers an unwavering focus on expert service, the company is now Armstrong Transportation Services and is an award-winning customer service and safety agent in the respected United Van Lines family.

In tribute to Gene’s dedication to the company partnership of over 60 years, United Van Lines renamed their excellence award to the Gene Anderson Excellence Award in honor of a man who always exemplified quality. This award is still given to those within the organization who demonstrate that commitment to quality, and Armstrong is honored to continue his legacy.

After serving in the United States Army Signal Corp in the Pacific during WWII, Gene Anderson opens Armstrong Warehouse and Transfer in Lubbock, Texas. He saw the early possibilities of United Van Lines years ago, signing a agent agreement in 1947. He worked diligently throughout the years to grow both United and Armstrong, resulting in a solid company partnership that has lasted more than 60 years.
Armstrong expands to the Midland/Odessa market to service customers in the Permian basin region. Armstrong continues to service the needs of an ever growing community as well as the expanding oil related industries.
Armstrong expands to the Alamo city. Our expansion into the San Antonio market allowed us to service this dynamic city as it grew into the nation’s seventh largest city and Texas’ second largest. We continue to enjoy all the Alamo city has to offer.
We expanded westward to El Paso. Although we enjoy the food, our main mission was to service the expanding border city moving needs. Armstrong has serviced numerous companies and governmental agencies as the city has grown into a major business border crossing with our Mexican neighbors.
Rick and Jane Anderson are named company leaders. They gained valuable experience managing Armstrong’s El Paso office and lead the company today by working diligently to continue Armstrong’s commitment to excellence. Like founder Gene Anderson, Rick is an active board member of UniGroup, serving on numerous committees and subsidiary boards.
Mr. Anderson passes away. He was elected to the United Van Lines board of directors and served for years in numerous capacities. He was the corporation’s treasurer at the time of his death. In tribute, United Van Lines renamed their excellence award to the Gene Anderson Excellence Award in honor of a man who always exemplified quality. Armstrong is honored to continue his legacy. The award is still given to those within the organization who demonstrate that commitment to quality.
Capital building
Armstrong moves its headquarters from Lubbock to Austin. Rick foresaw the growth coming in Austin and wanted to be closer to the action as the area developed. This move saw Armstrong expand its offerings to our customers by feeding off the energy of the growing business climate of central Texas.
Armstrong office
Armstrong designed and built our 60,000 square foot state of the art headquarters in Round Rock. The new facility sitting on 10 plus acres allowed us to expand our offering to central Texas relocation customers by offering managed warehouse space and piece level storage management of their goods. This with combined access and video security were state of the art and have been upgraded to keep up with the technological advances.
Following in father’s footsteps Rick Anderson was elected to board of directors. He has been re-elected every 2 years since and served on various committees including governance, marketing, and operations. It was during his time on the board of directors that UniGroup grew to exceed a 1.5 billion dollar a year enterprise servicing the entire globe.
